Sculpture in stainless steel and bronze by Jim Cunningham

About the artist

Jim Cunningham has been creating sculptures for over forty years. His passion for sculpture and the use of abstraction have been heavily influenced by opportunties to apprentice with several African artists, including Lamidi Fakeye, a Nigerian wood carver, and Nicholas Mukomberanwa and Damian Manuhwa, Zimbabwean stone sculptors. His choice of metal alloys and skills in cutting, bending and welding metal have been refined through several friendships in the metal fabrication and welding industries.

After conceiving the basic intent of a sculpture, Jim refines its shape and symbolism in a model. Its parts are then cut using computer-directed plasma, laser, and water jet cutters. The parts are bent to shape and welded together. A patina is applied to the bronze.

Jim now uses stainless steel and bronze exclusively, with stained glass and granite as accents. He prefers to create large, abstract public sculptures that symbolize enduring values in human experience.

Why "MIG Creations?"

"MIG" is an abbreviation for "metal, inert gas," a common form of welding. The website title reflects the use of this technique in most of Jim's sculptures.
